"There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors                                        are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again."                                                                                                                               Elizabeth Lawrence

The Garden Is Designed Around Five Themed Sections

                                                                       Children's Garden of Discovery

This area, located in the center of the Garden and surrounded by path, features "touch plants," "fragrant plants," and "animal plants."  Touch plants include soft lamb's ears, peppermint geranium, and smooth succulents.  Fragrant plants include scented geraniums and herbs.  Animal plants include lion's tail, cat mint, hens-and-chicks, and kangaroo paw.

This area, located off a winding bark path at the eastern-most corner of the Garden, is surrounded by trees and is punctuated by a view of Polliwog Pond and all its wildlife.  Completed in February of 2006, a deck now provides seating for small groups.

                                                                        Bird and Butterfly Habitat

This is a lushly planted area that includes butterfly bush, California lilac, hummingbird sage, and other species all of which are well adapted to the region.  The Habitat was designed to attract butterflies, such as buckeyes, monarchs, painted ladies, and morning cloaks; and birds, such as grosbeaks, western tanagers, hummingbirds, and goldfinch.

                                                                     California lilac (Ceanothus) and Bulbine

                                                                              Wildflower Meadow

This area features annual California wildflowers, including our state flower, the golden poppy.

                                                                                                      Clarkia and California poppies

                                                                             Matilija Poppy Hillside

The hillside, started from three small donated cuttings, bursts with color in May and June, displaying one of our most spectacular California natives.

The goal of the Garden's organizers is to inspire and educate the community on conserving our natural resources by introducing plants adapted to the native coastal environment.  The Garden was specifically designed to a scale that can be translated to the modestly sized beach garden with plants that are both   drought-tolerant and pest-resistant.   With ADA approved pathways and a drinking fountain, the    Garden comfortably accommodates individuals of all ages, including a classroom-size group.
