"There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors                                        are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again."                                                                                                                               Elizabeth Lawrence

The Garden Is Designed Around Five Themed Sections

                                                                                    Matilija Poppy Hillside

Started from three small donated cuttings, this hillside bursts with color in May and June, displaying one of our most spectacular California natives.  Standing 6-8 feet tall, stalks produce showy "fried-egg" like flowers.  Each is 6 inches in diameter with chalk-white crepe-papery petals that look like they have been crumpled and pleated. The center is an orange cluster containing dozens of pollen bearing stamens.  The plant's leaves are dentate, meaning they have a tooth edged margin or edge.  Seeds require fire to germinate, but existing plants may spread by sending out underground runners.  Cutting stalks back each fall ensures a dramatic spring and summer comeback.
